The Flayer[]
The Flayer is a being rumored to roam the unclaimed woods around WealdWing territory. While having no apparent form, The Flayer is depicted as a shape-shifting being of black mist and smoke, with a solid wolf-like skull and glowing red eyes in the sockets. The Flayer makes noises similar to those of a whale, and often in higher pitched tones and screeches. The Flayer’s body is made of a Smokey appearing substances that can be bitten or torn off, and it is typically the same height as extremely tall trees, allowing it to camouflage in the branches.
The Flayer was first rumored of by a Thicket Clan theta, who said they spotted the creature in the woods. Unknown of the Flayer actually attacked two WealdWings out hunting or if it was something else, but only one returned, horrified by what they had seen.
Given its fearsome name, The Flayer (on few eyewitness accounts) is said to “tug your skeleton from your skin” according to the singular survivor. The Flayer would then animate the skeleton and have it do The Flayer’s bidding, such as hunting and killing. With each kill it made, the Skeleton would take what it killed’s skin and cover its own body with it. The Flayer is similarly a puppet master, controlling its deceased victims.
However, legend tells of a WealdWing who fought off The Flayer with the assistance of the skeleton’s who’d turned on their master. This WealdWing drove the being into the depths of a lake (now known as Lake Fathomless in the AevumWing territory) where it was never seen again. So far there have yet to be anymore victims of this merciless Flayer, although the legend is used to scare young dragonets into behaving.
