Everyone who lives in Sanctuary thinks that nobody openly opposes The Smiler anymore. They think everyone just shuts up, takes their happiness, and continues on their day. But one dragon stands in the way of total happiness. A challenger for Smiler’s throne, he seeks to use happiness to destroy itself. The Clown Prince of Crime. The Joker.
A P P E A R A N C E
If you ever thought that no other dragon could wield such a maniacal grin as the Smiler, watch out for this guy. His scales alternating between Purple and Green, he has the same crazy smile on his face as his enemy. Since his crimes theme around carnival things, he keeps his face a powdered white, a gigantic smile made of blood painted over his real mouth, allowing him to both smile and frown without getting caught and forced to be corrected. Not that Correction would have any effect on him, but he just wouldn’t want to get caught and subjected to the horribleness he’s sure the Smiler would have stored for him.
P E R S O N A L I T Y
No sane doctor has ever found a cure for Joker’s problems. Psychopathic, sociopathic, Joker wants to be on top. Demanding loyalty, he kills his own henchmen just to inspire loyalty. He almost seems like another creature, similar to a dragon but crazy, obsessed with killing Joy, enjoying nothing but killing.One thing other than his killing, is his enigmatic eccentricity. Even dragons who hate crime seem to be obsessed with him. He’s like a black hole. Everything gets sucked up by him and dies.
H I S T O R Y
Not many know of the Joker’s origin anymore. Either because he’s killed them, or they haven’t spoken about it since they know he’ll find them. The popular theory is that he was once a comedian named Grasshopper, economically floundering, owing money to a gang, and in love soon to be married. Some say that he couldn’t pay up, so his fiancé was killed by the gang. Those who have dug into old records of The Ministry of Joy have found reports of an attempted break-in the night of the murder, and conspiracy theorists have said that perhaps the gang gave Joker one last chance by having him try to steal the laughing gas for him. Around this time, it was recorded The Smiler was out in that area. What happened next, no dragon has any idea, but we can only imagine these two ran into each other. The next time Joker stepped into the spotlight, was after a mass murder in a movie theater after he injected everyone inside the building with his Joker Venom. He was thrown into prison multiple times, always escaping, and always avoiding Correction. Through time in one prison, he met his second in command Bane, whom he modified his gear to run on Joker Venom instead of regular steroids. He fell in, and than out, of love with a worker within Sanctuary and the MoJ named Harlequin. He raised a gang from the ashes, and now is out to declare war on happiness. (Side note for me, why does ending it this way sound lazy?)
R E L A T I O N S H I P S
The Smiler/The MoJ: His eternal enemy, he won’t stop until everything Smiles built is burned to the ground. He hates everyone within the MoJ, and wants them dead too for supporting Smiler’s reign.
Bane: His second in command, he first met The Bane of Dragons in prison. Noting how weak steroids were for his soon-to-be lieutenant, he modified the suit to run on Joker Venom. It was Bane’s strength that broke them out, and his strength that built up Joker’s already bolstering gang into elite soldiers.
Harlequin: Joker’s old girlfriend, he seduced her into quitting her Joy treatments and joining him into a life of crime. After she abandoned him during a raid on a part of Sanctuary, he promptly broke up with her, and abandoned her. He now hates the beautiful Silkwing with a passion.
A B I L I T I E S
First, let’s start with Joker’s most memorable ability. His Joker Venom. Nobody knows how it formed, just that after the fabled encounter with Smiles, he could know use the Joker Venom freely. A powerful neurotoxin, it succumbs it’s victims to fits of laughter. If an antidote is not distributed early enough, the victim will simply laugh themselves to death, either from choking on their own spit or running out of air from laughing. Joker is also highly tolerant when it comes to pain, sometimes simply by laughing. He was once found stabbed through the head with a spear giggling like a child. He’s proficient in hand-to-hand combat, but also is skilled with a staff as he has a cane he also uses as a weapon.
T R I V I A
- I took a couple different Joker actors as inspiration. In my head, he’s voiced by Mark Hamill’s Joker, who voices the joker in most animated Batman series and the Batman: Return to Arkham video game series. In terms of evilness and intelligence, he’s like Heath Ledger’s Joker. We will not be discussing Jared Leto’s Joker in this trivia fact.
- As much as he hates The Smiler, Joker feels they’re 2 halves to the same whole, with The Smiler sorta taking over Batman’s role in The Smiling AU.
- I mean, what else is there to say, but “Send in the Clowns”? No wait, I didn’t mean it guys! It was a joke!
