Star is a male human who lives in East Tide Village. He studies dragon behavior and is on good terms with Ebony, a dragon he met a few times.

Description[]

Star is a tall human with dark gray hair and gray eyes. He wears tan and brown pants and a dark red shirt. He often carries a book and a pencil to write with in a bag. Around his neck and on his wrist are circles of white scales from Ebony. He has a small scar on his hand.

Personality[]

Star is curious, often too curious for his own good. Curiosity killed the cat? More like curiosity killed the human. Had Ebony been any other dragon, Star would’ve been killed. But Star is overly cautious since he knows not all dragons are friendly and will stay away from them if he’s not familiar with them or if they aren’t Ebony and his family. Star does like dragons and wants to learn more about their behavior for humankind, believing maybe, just maybe, he can find a peaceful and permanent solution that doesn’t involve killing dragons.

In his youth, Star has an overwhelming urge to study and pursue knowledge, but knew his limits and that sometimes it’s better to run away than stay. Sometimes however, his urge to find more answers landed him in trouble with the humans of his village. He was also very naive, initially believing everything he was told as a kid.

While dragons like SkyWings scare him, Star has a soft spot for one dragon in particular, Ebony and will look for and come to see the NightWing if he spots him.

Background[]

Star was born and raised in East Tide, a village by the sea in the Sky Kingdom. There, he was told tales of dragons that ate humans and that all of them were incredibly dangerous. While he believed the stories at the time, Star found the beasts fascinating and wanted to study them. He began to train under an aging scientist who also studied dragons and their behavior. Through this scientist, Star learned that not all dragons were vile, evil monsters that killed everything they saw. The scientist told him about the time he saw a red one, a SkyWing, assist a MudWing after the village defenses injured the latter. The scientist believed that humans and dragons could coexist if they could remember how to communicate with them. Star vowed to his mentor that he’d find a permanent solution through live study. While his mentor was skeptical, as every dragon he observed was from a distance, he had great faith in Star and gave him a notebook and pencil he could use if he ever saw a dragon up close.

Star’s first encounter was with a dragon named Ebony. The blind NightWing had been flying to the sea to look for Abyssal, when he stopped to rest near East Tide. Star took the opportunity to study Ebony while he slept. While jotting down notes, Star looked up and to his absolute terror, Ebony’s one eye was open and looking right at him. Star thought the NightWing would eat him in sight and braced for a quick death. Instead, Ebony sniffed Star curiously and even nudged him playfully. Ebony had never seen a human before. Being blind, Ebony also did not see humans as prey, since he was more herbivorous in nature due to his disability.

Star finally realized that Ebony wasn’t going to eat him, seeing that the NightWing’s behavior was similar to that of a dog that was trying to play with him. He jotted down more notes as Ebony bounced around him, trying to get Star’s attention and play with him him. Star even touched Ebony’s snout and to his amazement, Ebony stood completely still, letting the human touch him. Star was in awe. He had touched a dragon and it didn’t hurt him at all.

When Star returned to the scientist, he told him everything and gave a complete description of Ebony, including his weird, cloudy blue eyes. The scientist shook his head and looked dead at Star, who was fantasizing about the future he could build. Pulling his apprentice aside, the scientist told Star that Ebony was blind and likely hadn’t seen humans or been near one before, hence his playful nature. The scientist guessed that since this was the dragon’s first encounter, it did not react offensively or defensively, because it did not see Star as prey or as a threat. Still, he congratulated Star on his findings, believing that humans and dragons were one step in returning to what they used to be.

Fast forward twelve years and Star has taken over the program. His mentor passed away from old age, leaving Star alone without any other assistants to help him. However, his encounter with Ebony did not stop all those years ago and several times the dragon came back to visit. Star thought it was odd that the NightWing kept returning. First of all, the scientist thought that the dragon would never return. Second of all, this wasn’t the NightWings habitat. But regardless, he was glad Ebony returned. One night, Ebony came to visit Star. Star left his village with his notes and pen, expecting the usual studies, when Ebony revealed a little surprise. He had a mate now and brought his three dragonets to meet Star. Star was thrilled to see the little ones, as not only were they cute, it opened new fields of study. He gave the dragonets time to get used to his presence and scent, then began to document his findings. All too soon, a blue dragon, who Star suspected to be the mother, called out to Ebony. Ebony gave Star a little nudge and left, taking his dragonets with him.

Star was sad to see the family go, but knows that they will return one day.

Trivia[]

  • Star got his scar, hilariously, from trying to give one of Ebony’s adoptive children a bath when they were really little. Borealis, being hydrophobic, flipped out and bit Star in response.
