Description[]
Polymath is a slippery CentiWing the color of olive oil stored in a cellar. They have very faint lateral striations on their back scales; these patterns are brilliant fire-orange rimmed by streaks of honeygold.
Their face is slender and sagely, with a stoic jaw and leathery texture, and small horns that are situated too far back on their head to be useful for combat. Their unexpressive whiskers hang from their face like heavy anchors bogging down their personality.
Personality[]
Polymath has had a lifelong enjoyment of gatekeeping every advantage they've earned, taking overwhelming pride in their education. They are not by any means the sort of dragon who would strike others as agreeable, and are known for being too smug, pompous, and touchy whenever their mouth is running-- but as a listener and advisor, they make phenomenal suggestions without being too presumptuous. Polymath makes an active effort to curb any pretensions of knowing more than they've learnt, and rarely says anything they don't mean, because they recognize how loathsome it is (and how poorly it sullies one's name) to awkwardly retract former claims. Moreso to save face than out of respect for clients and colleagues, in other words.
Polymath's sensibility and conservative attitude have made them a crucial advisor at Chiefs' Convents, which has forced the other Nest Chiefs to tolerate their lordly disposition and manner of speaking.
Of course, all of this is seen from a perspective outside of Polymath themself. The dragon is not without their own private thoughts and concerns, after all.
History[]
Polymath was not raised by their parents because their parents were killed (civilian casualty in a HiveWing fight) prior to Polymath's hatching. Instead the dragonet was incubated in the community nursery due to their closest living relatives lacking maternal tendencies. When Polymath hatched, the caretakers named them Echo, because they were fond of imitating the adults around them.
Polymath was educated as a Scholar of Hrringa-- that is, a cleric who uses multidisciplinary knowledge of history, language, and social sciences to supplement their studies-- because Polymath found the philosophical inquiries presented by religion particularly fascinating. Under the pedagogy they were mindful, they did what they believed was right; they even offered counsel to Nest Chiefs once they'd gained some seniority in the clergy, attempting to lighten spirits and raise morale with a more rationalized than faith-based mindset. But ultimately they never achieved that feeling of consummation, as despite however hard they exalted Hrringa's magic in hopes of reciprocation, it was for the sake of hoarding knowledge and not achieving spiritual catharsis that they chased religion in the end-- they were a longing observer at most.
They were extremely resentful of the Khans for so simply achieving a stronger connection to Hrringa, seeing as most of these rivals were not raised to know Hrringa like Polymath was, and in their thorough shame Polymath took a break from their service of Hrringa to sort themselves out. They took up weaving and dumpling-cooking, but they felt dispassionately about the arts; despite the feeling of warmth it gave them to make the community happy with their lovely tapestries and homecooked food, they had always been questioning, questioning, and it was uncomfortable to go for so long without the nourishment of philosophy. As they questioned more and more, they became more awakened to their competence as a community member, and made up their mind that maybe it was their fate to assume power directly rather than study its ebbing.
They decided to try for Nest Chief, and were picked by their peers in 5001 AS based on their ability to counsel their peers, which funnily enough contradicted the feeling of emptiness that was picking at them. However, being handed the responsibility of Nest Chief has really invigorated Polymath's life quite a bit, giving them a newfound inspiration.
