Lance Caspian Carver[1] (known to the dragons as "Silver"[2]) is a male human created by L1quid. He is the main protagonist of Shifting Stars, the third/final novel in Pern, and the short story The Soldier and the Child.

Appearance[]

Like most humans on "Pern", Carver has pale skin. He also has grey eyes.[3]

When he first appeared in the series, he wore some type of futuristic armor. Later on, his armor was taken from him by the NightWings and their riders; and he wore a long-sleeved white shirt, black pants, and black shoes for the rest of the series.[3]

He has a futuristic gun strapped to him most of time as a means of defending himself or other humans. However, this gun was taken from him by the NightWing dragonriders at the end of Shifting Seas and at the beginning of Shifting Storms.[3][1]

History[]

Past[]

Pre-Birth[]

In 5,012 A.S., soon after Wasp was defeated by Luna, the humans and dragons of Pern began searching for clues about their true past. It would take nearly fifty years of fruitless excavations and digging before they finally found the spaceships that initially brought the colonists.

With that, they rediscovered some old Earth traditions that had been lost to the planet's history - such as first and last names. They also found the technology that the colonists used to create the dragons (through genetic manipulation) and to defend themselves.

When the humans first adopted the use of first and last names, they quickly found that it was more effective than just using first names. They then began tracing their genealogies to determine who was descended from who, and one of them was a male ancestor of Carver.

This male ancestor adopted the Carver family name, which has now been in the family for several generations.[4]

Early Life[]

Carver was born in the (futuristic) Indestructible City thirty to forty-something years before the main events of Pern.[4]

Present[]

Shifting Seas[]

Carver is a supporting character in Shifting Seas - the first novel in Pern, which occurs two hundred years post-Prophecies (after the main events of Wings of Fire). He only appeared in the novel's third act.[4]

He is first hinted at when Tide has a dream about a human putting its hand on her snout early in the second act, when she's held hostage by the Undercurrents.

He officially first appears as "Silver" after Tide wakes from her medically induced coma, discovering that she lost an eye and one of her back legs, in the RainWing capital. He is sitting with Eel, a SeaWing who became his owner after his previous owner died unexpectedly.

As Eel gets Tide water for her parched throat, Carver pets her snout before climbing onto her head. Crystal, Eel's coworker, senses that Carver has taken a liking to the SeaWing.

[...]

In the middle of the night, the Indestructible City is under attack. Ashes suddenly takes one of the dragons hostage and forces all of them to surrender to the NightWings. When Tide agrees to surrender to the tribe, Carver is separated from her and taken to a human settlement off the coast of the Sky Kingdom, close to the NightWing island.

Shifting Storms[]

Carver is a minor character in Shifting Storms - the second novel in Pern, which occurs two hundred years post-Prophecies (after the main events of Wings of Fire).[4]

Carver is first seen in the prologue, being dumped and confined to one of the two human cities on the coast of the Sky Kingdom nearest to the NightWing island.

More coming soon...

Shifting Stars[]

Carver is the main protagonist of Shifting Stars - the third/final novel in Pern, which occurs two hundred years post-Prophecies (after the main events of Wings of Fire).[4]

After all of the humans, dragons, and aliens were dumped onto Burroughs 2 by A.R.K., Carver and others explore the planet while also learned how to adapt and survive on it. One of the geographical areas discovered was a small cove on the southern continent, which was named "Carver's Cove" in his honor (since he was the one that found it).

Passes[]

Carver is the main protagonist of The Solider and the Child, a short story focusing on Carver's experiences under the NightWings while also befriending a feral child.[5]

Relations[]

Eel[]

Eel is a male SeaWing who became Carver's dragon owner after his previous owner passed unexpectedly.[3]

Lily Carver[]

Lily Carver was the biracial daughter of Lance Carver and Violet Waters before she was eaten by dragons during a battle.[1]

Phoenix[]

Phoenix is a male human whom Carver befriended when the human-dragon resistance formed. He is also the rider of Ashes, a female NightWing.

After Phoenix betrayed Carver and the rest of the human-dragon resistance to the NightWings, he lost all respect for and trust in him.

Tree[]

Tree was female LeafWing that was Carver's previous owner/dragon before she was killed in battle,[1] handing him to Eel.[3]

Violet Waters[]

Violet Water is a female human who was Lance's wife before she eaten by dragons during a battle.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Lance Carver is the Wings of Fire adaptation of the character of the same name from L1quid's These Alien Dragons trilogy.[4]
    • Carver's character was loosely based on Mills (Adam Driver), the main protagonist of the science-fiction/horror film 65 (2023) (which is by the same duo that created the Quiet Place franchise). Although L1quid has no problem with the original character (they view him as a more militaristic version of Lee Abbott from A Quiet Place), they felt that the original character's naming was "off" and not thematic enough. (There are several characters in L1quid's books that are based on characters from the science-fiction, fantasy, and fiction genres.)[6]
      • L1quid saw 65 (2023) on 03/13/2023, and needs to note a few differences from the source inspiration in regards to the character. (Because the film was released digitally 04/03/2023 due to people complaining to Sony Pictures that their respective theater stopped showing the film after several weeks or wasn't showing it at all, the film in its entirely will be spoiled here.)[7]
        • First, the film ends with Mills and Koa escaping Jurassic Earth just before the Chicxulub meteor strikes the planet, and doesn't show their fates before and after the credits roll. The credits show the aftermath of the meteor strike over time, in the perspective of the second half of the destroyed spaceship.[7] In TAD, Carver's fate is known at the end of book 3 (alongside the other characters and species in the series).[6]
        • Secondly, the four characters that do appear in the film are a species of humanoid alien known as the "Somarians", as the film's prologue shows that their homeworld is planet Somaris. In TAD, the characters based on 2023 film's characters are human rather than alien.[6]
        • Thirdly, Mills and Koa speak different dialects of the Somarian language in the film, leading to some frustrating yet humorous scenes.[7] In TAD, all the human characters speak English and write in a hybrid form of American and British English, leading to very few "fun" scenes in the series. (L1quid writes with a combination of American and British English with regards to certain words and phrases in real life.)[6]
    • Carver was made the protagonist of the final book (in the original series and the WoF adaptation) to ensure that the series wasn't just in the perspective of dragons. This role was originally given to several other characters (humans, dragons, and aliens) before he was chosen.[6]
      • The initial candidates for book 3's main protagonist were Jonah, a male human who was isolated for the majority of his life and raised by dragons before being reincorporated due to the series' events; Nicholas Adamson VI, a male human and the physical/spiritual leader of said humans; and Peak, a male MountainWing (Argil the MudWing in WoF) who becomes part of the main team. Nicholas Adamson VI was the semifinal protagonist, as the book deals with losing everything and learning how to rebuild from that loss. Since Carver was heavily focused on throughout the books (as L1quid wrote them), he was made the protagonist and Adamson was demoted from "main protagonist" to "side character". Despite this, Adamson still plays a large role in the books.[6]
  • Carver's moniker is his surname because L1quid likes watching crime shows. In these shows, characters are always referred to by their surnames in dialogue (even though their first names may be used also).[6]
  • “Lance” is an English name derived from Germanic name “Lanzo”, which was originally the short form of names that began with the Old Frankish or Old Saxon element “land”, which was derived from the Old German word “lant”.[8] During the Middle Ages, the name became associated with the Old French word “lance” (“spear, lance”). “Carver” is an English last name described someone who works as a carver; it is derived from the Middle English word “kerve”, which means “cut”.[9]
  • Carver's first (indirect) appearance in Pern and its original source content was inspired by Alina Starkov dreaming about Morozova's Stag in season 1 of Shadow and Bone before its death at the hands of the Darkling. This was originally not thought out by L1quid in their final outline, but they decided to put in there anyway because they saw the show in April 2023 (it was on their "shows to watch" list) and they believe that dreams can reveal a character's state of mind in a story.[6]
  • Carver being the main protagonist of a short story in Passes was deliberate, as L1quid would not be able to explore everything that happened during Shifting Storms (based on the final plot/outline).[5]

Notes[]

On 05/16/2023, L1quid started updating the pages of Tide, Ashes, and Carver with content from the original series and its WoF adaptation.

So beware of spoilers!
