As a shop owner in the HiveWing kingdom, all seems well. Your day is going quite fine. You've sold a lot of merchandise and you're quite context about it. A dragon comes up to your stand curiously, asking about your tapestries as he runs his talons over the beautiful silk.

"Absolutely gorgeous," he comments. You're quite flattered. It takes a lot of skill for a HiveWing to learn this much weaving, and a lor of money. Importing from the Silk kingdom isn't cheap.

"How much do you think-"

"Horntail, get you scales over here, you ugly ant!" A voice booms. The dragon looks over with his ears flopped down, and so do you. A HiveWing, covered in much jewelry is waiting with a few accompanying guards and servants. You can't believe it. It's queen Cochineal's favorite and most spoiled daughter, Lady Wasp. You look back at the HiveWing before you.

"I'm sorry, I have to catch up to my sister. Amazing tapestries you have here, I hope to visit someday. Again, I'm so, so sorry, sir," he says with a small bow before scurrying off. You're in shock. That was a HiveWing lord? How come I don't know of him? Why doesn't he act like royalty? What's wrong with him?

Description[]

Horntail has a base of gold-colored scales, dark brown markings and brown under-scales. His scales have a very similar texture to metal, making him look as though he were made of gold or bronze. He seems unusually metallic-colored for the typical dragon. He has golden eyes that dragons describe to have a "warm sparkle" to it. Most say that "he looks like a version of Wasp if she wasn't such a thorn bush".

Dragons describe his voice to be "nerdy," and to lack formality.

(see voice claim boxe for voice)

Personality[]

Strangers and commoners regard Horntail to be a very polite, cordial and likable dragon, while Horntail's family see him as weak, useless and a disappointment. Horntail is a fragile dragon with much care for others, although he lacks bravery, often choosing to hide rather than to resist. He often feels conflicted in making the right decision. His confidence is like a shard of glass, easily shattered by anyone, Wasp in particular. Horntail is a rather hopeless dragon, preferring to accept defeat rather than to hope for the best and keep fighting. He struggles to speak out against injustice and prefers not to be politically active. One of Horntail's dictating traits is curiosity, with his interest in innovation often leading his decisions. He's a talkative dragon who loves explaining his ideas and works to any dragon willing to listen to his endless babbling.

Biography[]

Back before the tree wars started, Horntail was considered odd, as he would constantly tinker with scraps of metal and other trinkets to make 'inventions.' He had quite the passive attitude for a royal HiveWing, constantly being bombarded with insults about his weakness. Horntail often preferred to get away from the palace, the place that'd he considered to be miserable. He chose to interact with the dragons of the hive kingdom as though he were one of them. He'd go out into the streets of hives like any other random citizen and most residents of saw him as an ordinary subject or as a member of their community.

Fatefully, once the Tree Wars began, Horntail saw no way out but to flee. The HiveWing lord faked his death, claiming he was going into battle. He disappeared into the vast forest, presumably to fight Leafwings, and never returned, marking him down in history as a hero. In reality, Horntail ran off to an island on the outskirts of the Dragon Head peninsula and left his wife and his egg behind in the life that he feared and the oppressive ways the Hive kingdom was falling toward.

On his way to the outskirts, Horntail met a very young orphaned LeafWing with the name Dandelion and adopted her, treating her as his own. The two settled on the farthest island of the outskirts, staying there with rare departures for necessities.

Many years after the Tree Wars, shortly before the downfall of Wasp, Horntail decided to begin heading to the Hives for more supplies. He was discovered and welcomed back home. Of course, he fabricated a story, leading dragons to believe he was still in hiding from the war. He met his son, reunited with his wife and met his grandson, all to his shock.

After Wasp's downfall, Horntail returned once more, revealing the truth about where he was and introducing Dandelion. This caused hatred from his biological son. why would his father willingly leave him to care for a LeafWing? Lilioceris ended things with Horntail, his son cut contact as did his grandson. Without much else to do, shortly after Jewel became queen, Horntail received a job offer at Pantala Interkingdom Academy and isolated himself from his family where he teaches to this day.

Relationships[]

Wasp[]

Horntail always had a shaky sibling ship with Wasp. Cochineal would often throw responsibility onto Horntail to watch his younger sister and accuse Horntail of irresponsibility when Wasp caused trouble. At older ages, the two only grew apart, with Wasp seeing Horntail as "A waste of royal blood" and Horntail viewing his sister as "A spoiled maniac who would make the continent fall for good". Prior to the Tree Wars, Wasp made small attempts to invite Horntail to royal meeting and such, which were all turned down by Horntail, leading her to stop. During the Tree Wars, Horntail was presumed dead, killed while fighting LeafWings, according to false reports. This only leeched an ounce of respect from Wasp, where according to her, "That grub was the last dragon I’d expect to die in battle. He never contributed to anything. At least he redeemed himself to the kingdom in his last moments."

Upon Horntail's brief return, he was welcomed as a survivor and a war hero, having to endure the harshness of the Poison Jungle for that many years. Wasp wasn't as hostile this time. Horntail hasn't interacted with Wasp ever since then and hasn't paid any visits to his sister in the Flamesilk Caverns.

Stinger[]

"Stinger" is the name that Horntail gave his experimental human. There was one day where he found him washed up on the beach, barely alive. He decided to put Stinger inside an enclosure where it had food, water, and a bunch of different items for Stinger to explore. As Stinger explored the items, Horntail noted down his behavior towards the items and what he did with them.

Horntail was made aware of his intelligence level when one day, he observed Stinger writing down small symbols on a sheet of paper that Horntail had given to him. After that, Horntail attempted teaching him dragon, starting with basic words. He managed to teach him very simple words such as "food" and "water". Not only that, but Horntail also tried learning the language Stinger spoke.

When first captured by Horntail, Stinger was very scared. But as time went on, he grew to like Horntail as Horntail provided food, water, clothes, and often let him go out of his enclosure to explore.

Cicada[]

Cicada was the eldest of his siblings and she never gave much attention to any of her sisters due to their chance on inheriting the throne when she was young. However, she eventually got better with them on terms. She had a stronger relationship with Horntail due to a common interest in knowledge and books.

Bloodworm[]

Horntail was regarded as "a weak coward who wastes his talent" by Bloodworm, sharing a lot of common opinions with Wasp. The two didn't interact too much.

Lilioceris[]

Before the Tree Wars, Lilioceris and Horntail held a lot of love for one another. Coming from a very noble family, Lilioceris could only feel freedom around Horntail, as did Horntail with Lilioceris. She was well liked by both Horntail and the other royals. Lilioceris felt shattered when Horntail left, believing he was dead and for a noble cause as well, and was more than delighted with his return. However, when she learned the truth about Horntail intentionally running and adopting a LeafWing, she felt nothing but hatred. Horntail left his wife feeling broken and betrayed. Lilioceris felt mixed emotions of both love and resentment. She broke things off shortly after.

Scantius[]

Upon his initial return, Scantius believed Horntail's false story and had much curiosity about his father that he never met, but was heartbroken when he departed again without a trace. Later, after Wasp's fall, upon finding out where Horntail had really been and how he adopted a LeafWing daughter, resentment became all he felt toward his father. The two have not talked since.

Violin[]

Violin, similar to his father, Scantius, holds a grudge against Horntail for abandoning their family. He considers him to be a failure of a royal and a terrible grandfather, choosing cowardice over his family.

Stag[]

His granddaughter, Stag, is the only dragon related to Horntail who's fond of him. As a student, she often visits her grandfather a lot, asking him questions about his innovations. She thinks of him to be a very open minded dragon, claiming that she'd run away in such a society as well, as she had been hatched after Wasp's defeat. Although their personalities are very different, the two share a lot of common ideas, such as open mindedness for other tribes and a large curiosity.
