personality
Isla is a kind, amiable dragon who cares deeply about his loved ones. While an introvert at heart, he lets loose much more around his friends and family. He's easily intimidated by most individuals, making it difficult for him to approach anyone unfamiliar. Due to this, he dislikes confrontation and tries to avoid it as much as possible. However, he'll quickly warm up to someone once he gets to know them better.
Isla has a short temper but rarely ever displays his anger outright, instead choosing to bottle it away until he can no longer contain it. This results in abrupt outbursts where he lashes out at others, although he's been learning to keep his emotions in check. He also tends to be overly self-critical and rarely opens up to others about his personal issues out of a fear of burdening them.
He has an affinity to nature and prefers to be outdoors whenever he can. He's especially fond of going on walks and swims on his own. Although he enjoys being around his friends, large group settings quickly drain his social battery, and he often needs to spend time alone to recharge afterwards.
early life
Isla was born in Squall's End, a port city in the Queendom of the Sea. His parents were both busy dragons with jobs that kept them away from home most of the time. Despite this, they did their best to accommodate their child for at least the first few years of his life. Although his family wasn't wealthy, they earned enough money to live in modest comfort and could afford a few indulgences.
At the age of one, Isla was promptly enrolled in the local school and began to attend classes there. Since he wasn't exactly the outgoing type, he kept to himself and rarely spoke to his fellow students, preferring to read or draw alone. For the majority of his youth, he had few friends, although he wasn't especially worried about his social situation.
Even from a young age, he displayed a strong passion for music, often experimenting with the various instruments available to him at school. As he grew older, his parents were able to hire a teacher to instruct him in the violin. Isla quickly grew in skill, practicing with fervor and even neglecting his other duties at times so that he could rehearse. Throughout the next couple of years, it seemed that things were just as they were meant to be.
But the peace didn't last. Gannet suddenly lost his job and was unable to find a new one. As their financial situation steadily worsened, the added stress began to take its toll on Isla's family. Viridian grew angry and irritable, snapping at her child for little to no reason.
Isla began to notice that his parents' arguments were becoming more frequent, whether they were about their relationship, their finances, or even him. This progressed to the point where he'd return from school only to find himself in the midst of a shouting match. He soon attempted to avoid his home as much as possible, spending more and more time near the seashore in the hopes of collecting his thoughts somewhere more tranquil.
When he turned four, his parents finally reached an agreement and decided to go their separate ways: Gannet moved to the heart of the queendom to pursue a new career, while Viridian and Isla relocated to Coral Cove, a town in the Bay of a Thousand Scales.
adolescence
Isla and Viridian's relationship became very strained after this. Viridian put a large amount of pressure on her child to succeed academically, which eventually took its toll on Isla's mental health. Whenever Isla attempted to approach his mother about this, he was immediately shot down, causing him to internalize many of his emotions.
Around this time, he grew especially close with Torrent, another resident of Coral Cove. They did their best to be supportive and understanding of his struggles, soon cementing their presence as a parental figure in Isla's life. To this day, he is still immensely grateful for their patience and encouragement. He also befriended a SandWing named Zinnia, and the two quickly bonded over their shared experiences as outsiders in Coral Cove. Eventually, they began a short-lived romantic relationship that dissolved a few months before Isla was set to graduate from school.
adulthood
After finally concluding his secondary education, Isla was at a loss of what to pursue next in his life. He managed to get back in touch with his father, who had since been appointed as one of Regent Nephthya's head scientists. After speaking with the ShallowWing regent's family, he discovered that they were in desperate need of more servants, especially since several more princes and princesses were set to hatch soon. They quickly offered to take in Isla as a handmaiden, and he accepted. Although it wasn't the most prestigious job, it paid well, and he was all too eager to finally leave Coral Cove behind.
Since then, Isla has grown accustomed to his work and takes pride in being able to assist others when he is needed. He primarily attends to the royal family's many princesses and occasionally the regent herself. In his free time, he enjoys playing the violin and relaxing near the beach. He periodically travels to the mainland in order to visit his friends and family.
description
Isla is an average height for his age; his build is stocky, with muscular arms and legs from walking everywhere. His body is padded with a bit of chubbiness, resulting in a plump face and generally rounded features. He tends to default to a placid expression.
His scales are primarily a jade green, while the scales on top of his head and along his spine are a darker variation of this color. In contrast, his underbelly is a soft seafoam green, a slightly lighter color than the webbing along his body. His gently curved horns are dark green, and his barbels are unusually long. He also has a forked blue tongue and teal eyes.
He wears a nose ring and is usually seen with several earrings as well. Most notably, he lacks a pair of wings as well as the majority of the photophores that SeaWings possess. He does, however, have a set of gills.
Ever since he's started working in the Summer Palace, he's taken to wearing a string of pale blue pearls that wreathes around his horns and neck—a gift from Prince Marina.
