Catshark has always felt like a bit of an outsider. Even in a town like Possibility, where hybrids have become a higher and higher section of the population, a town known historically for setting aside differences to build a better, bigger community, Catshark has never felt like he was in the in-group. Other dragonets would gossip, take advantage of his friendliness to make him do their community chores, and play dumb when confronted by any adults. It was relentless mocking for the first couple years of his life, until he was finally enrolled at Jade Mountain Academy.
At first, he begged not to go, afraid it would only shape up worse from there. But his parents insisted. Ladybird had gone, why shouldn't he? It took him a year to finally start opening up, breaking out of his second shell of shyness and fear of mistreatment, and eventually he became a sort of floater. He didn't have many friends, and certainly no close ones, but he had enough of a friendly and open spirit to be kept around, asked advice, invited to sleepovers, clubs, and hangouts. This ended up creating a new kind of loneliness, and in the midst of his yearning for closeness with somebody, he meets a certain royal Sandwing, someone who is just as harrowed about being there as he was, but for his own reason.
Catshark is a pale brown, nearly pink dragon with splotches of powdery blue scales that glitter. Miniscule silver scales dapple small sections of his body, which is notably much more Hivewing-like than Seawing. He does not have wings, and was born without anything more than the beginnings of wing nubs on each shoulder. His fins and frills are especially delicate compared to the average Seawing fins, and as a result of his clumsiness, there are some fairly fine stitches across a couple of them, holding together tears that would have complicated swimming to an inconvenient degree.
Catshark lives in a world set 2000 years later than the initial migration of Leafwings and Silkwings to the continent of Pyrrhia after the Hivemind was able to overtake much of the Pantalan continent. Possibility has grown significantly since it was first formed, including many Silkwing, Hivewing, and Leafwing families who have been there for generations. Catshark is one of many, many hybrids who have since been integrated into a much larger, more expansive Jade Mountain Academy curriculum and campus. He had joined the Welcoming Committee for new students when Prince Sidewinder transferred to the school for his first year of public education, accompanied by bodyguards and an especially jittery and closed-off energy.
Difficult as it was, Catshark managed to get the skittish prince to go on a tour, let alone speak to him. It's an eye opening experience for him, trying to encourage someone as reclusive as he had been when he first arrive to join clubs, try joining a study group or two in the library in the afternoon, or come with him to be introduced to some incredibly patient and formerly shy dragonets he might have something in common with. It felt incredibly foreign, especially in his first year as a student ambassador, an ambition he hadn't considered until one of his much more extroverted friends brought it up.
Now, he was really starting to see things from her perspective.
