Balsam is a female MudWing with mahogany main scales and maroon under scales. She has stunning gold eyes and dark brown everything else. She is bulky and awkward, contrary to the flowered herb she was named for. Balsam has a thick tail and a wide head and neck, but she is stumpy in height
Balsam is as shy as they come, but unable to hide in the back due to her appearance. Her reddish scales and strange proportions make her stick out from the rest of the crowd. Balsam is so shy, she is even afraid of a couple members of her troop. She hates to speak, but loves to sing. She is always trying to do the right thing, though, even when she is scared.
Balsam might be shy, but she is also brave. She is a good singer and mapmaker, always able to tell what
Balsam is very shy, as mentioned, and is not the sharpest pencil in the box ethier. She tends to speak up at the wrong moment every time she opens her mouth. Balsam has a bad memory for everything except maps and locations, and is very gullible.
Balsam was born third in her troop. Her bigwings is a stern but well meaning female named Diamondback, who Balsam adores. Next is her super-smart and super annoying brother Nettle, who she is afraid of. After Balsam herself comes another sister, Boa, who is energetic and outgoing. Balsam admires Boa, but Boa makes her nervous. After Boa comes two more brothers, first Stork and then Caiman. Stork is goofy and sweet, and Balsam loves him a lot. Caiman is snappish and sarcastic, trying to make up for being the smallest, in the process making Balsam terrified of him.
Balsam grew up near the edges of the Diamond Spray Delta with her brothers and sisters. They weren't old enough to have to fight until the last few months of the war of SandWing Succession. During a battle, Nettle lost an eye, and Stork lost his back, left leg. They resumed getting an education after the war. Diamondback, Nettle, and Caiman excelled in school, Boa and Stork were average, and Balsam struggled at the back of the intellectual pack. As of six, Balsam's current age, she is beginning to read and do simple addition.
