Appearance[]

Ambition was a smooth, muscular NightWing who looked both regal and powerful. When she was younger, she usually wore a confident grin on her face, and stood with an energetic stance. However, after Praya Dubia smashed their eggs, she became much more subdued- his betrayal affected her deeply, even years after it happened.

Her main scales were black with a yellow-ish tint to them, with her underbelly being lighter and slightly more saturated. Her horns and claws were similar in color, though not quite the exact same. Some of her scales- such as the ones on the top of her head and running down her back- and her spines had a slight iridescent sheen to them, and were a bit darker than her main scales.

Her eyes were a dark gray that, in contrast to her scales, had more of a cold blue tinge to them.

Ambition's scales had small scrapes and scars along them, most of them from her experiences as a former explorer with thorny plants or sharp rocks or some other painfully sharp piece of nature.

She sometimes wore jewelery, small pieces with orange stones or glass being her favorite, although she wasn't by any means rich, and as such her choices were sometimes limited.

History[]

Ambition hatched on the hidden NightWing island a few hundred years after the tribe fled there to avoid Darkstalker.

At this point in time, the island's volcano had yet to erupt- and, as such, the tribe was thriving. Maybe not quite to the point that they had been in the old kingdom, but still, they weren't starving or breathing ash-filled air yet, and the water around the island was clean and clear, and dragonets were hatching without frequent complications, so it was still going alright for the NightWings.

And yet...they were still sending out explorers and scouts, looking for more suitable places to hunt and live, although it wasn't because the tribe was dying off, it was because they could just have used extra space. Volcano or not, the island was somewhat small, and an extra food source wouldn't be a bad thing anyways.

Ambition grew up wanting to be an explorer. She worked hard through her childhood, devoting her time to memorizing what to do in certain weather, what not to tell the other tribes if they saw her, and so on. It came as no surprise when she was eventually chosen to be one of the explorers. Her family was proud, her friends so excited for her, Ambition was happy. Of course, everyone was also a bit nervous- how could they not be, sending another dragon off into the wild, where she might encounter dangers?

But Ambition herself wasn't worried. Everyone thought she was just naturally confident and brave, but deep down, it was because she knew she had something to keep her safe if anything happened.

Only a few months beforehand, while training alone, Ambition got the edge of her wing caught in a thorn bush, and, frustrated, she hissed at it to just stop pricking her. To her astonishment, it did. Instantly. Perfectly.

Shocked, an idea formed in Ambition's mind- and to prove it, she told her map to become unable to be damaged by fire or water. Then she breathed fire onto it, and when she stopped, it was totally unburnt.

Ambition was an animus.

She kept it a secret from the tribe. Even her siblings, who she thought of as her best friends, were totally unaware of it. She'd heard to horror stories of Darkstalker- she didn't want anyone to think badly of her because she had the same magic.

It was only months later, when she ran into a charming SeaWing guard, that she told another dragon of her secret magic.

Although she'd been taught otherwise, Ambition had gone into SeaWing territory. If she was being honest, it was mostly for her own gain- she knew there was no way she'd find anything for the NightWings in SeaWing territory. But she wanted to see Bay of a Thousand Scales, even for just a little bit. And she was being remarkably careful, too. No SeaWing saw her- until the night when she was about to head out of the Sea Kingdom.

As Ambition rested in a cave on a small island, half asleep, a dark blue dragon wandered in. He looked furious, and when she saw him she jolted awake, wondering if she stil had time to hide.

She did not, and the SeaWing saw her, but instead of getting more angry like she had expected, he only looked surprised- and a curious.

After a few minutes of confusion and panic, the two ended up having an actual conversation. The SeaWing introduced himself as Praya Dubia, a guard who was prsctically the queen's son. He said that as much as he cared about her, she could be frustrating at times, and that was why he'd come to that cave- he'd wanted to find a quiet spot to calm down at.

Ambition introduced herself, too, even though a part of her knew it could be a bad idea. Something about the SeaWing made him easy for her to talk to. They spent most of the night chatting together, until Praya Dubia said he had to go back before someone came looking for him. The idea made Ambition oddly sad, and she asked if he could come back when he got the chance. Maybe she didn't have to leave the SeaWing kingdom yet.

Praya Dubia agreed. And while Ambition had expected him to come back after a few days or maybe a week or so had passed if at all, instead he returned to the cave the next night.

That night, as the walked along the island together, Ambition found herself willing to tell Praya Dubia more and more about herself. He was just so sweet, and obviously he wasn't trying to just get info out of her for the SeaWings, or he would've already gotten others to capture and interrogate her or something. She slipped the mention of her magic into the conversation casually, not even thinking much of it until Praya Dubia interrupted her, his eyes wide, and asked what she meant.

She could've lied to him then, or made him forget, but she didn't to. She told him again that she had animus magic, and when he looked like he couldn't believe it, she took a piece of driftwood that had washed up onto the shore and turned it into a glittering string of emeralds for him.

They met again and again after that. And when Ambition really did have to go back to the NightWing island for a while, she promised to come back and meet Praya Dubia again in a few months.

Back at home, Ambition's family was overjoyed to see her again. Her parents were mostly just relieved and proud, even when she reported no success in finding what she was looking for. Brightthought and Insight, however, were more curious, asking about the smaller details of the trip. What kind of different plants and animals had she seen? How many different spots had she been?

Ambition told them as much as she could, trying not to go too in depth when answering about whether she'd met any other dragons or not. Her siblings noticed this, and as nosy siblings do, asked her about it one day when their parents were asleep.

Once they promised never to tell anyone else, Ambition told her siblings of the sweet SeaWing she'd met. They laughed, told her they probably should've seen it coming, told Ambition that if this SeaWing broke her heart, they'd find him and destroy him, etc.

Ambition felt gratitude towards her siblings for being so understanding and ready to defend her, although she was sure then that Praya Dubia would never do anything to hurt her.

She went back out again after a while, met with Praya Dubia, and stayed with him for as long as she could, learning more and more about him multiple times. Sometimes Praya Dubia would do or say something that might have bothered her if it was anyone else, but...it was Praya Dubia. Things Ambition would roll her eyes at for being too self-absorbed were instead endearingly silly coming from Praya Dubia. It wasn't his fault, she told herself. He said he was close with the queen, he was probably just sheltered. He'd learn. He had a good heart.

And eventually Ambition had 3 eggs, the father being her beloved Praya Dubia. And the two were a little nervous, but determined to raise their dragonets, even if they didn't know exactly how. Maybe they'd go to the NightWings, or maybe the SeaWing queen would be understanding.

(Praya Dubia totally believed that she would be, although Ambition couldn't help but remember that he'd previously mentioned that the queen was...controlling, to the point that he thought that if she heard about her adopted son being in romance she didn't approve of, she'd be beyond furious.)

While their eggs sat nestled in the cave in the SeaWing kingdom, as always, the time came that Ambition would be expected to report back to the NightWings. Praya Dubia promised he would keep an eye on the eggs for her, and that he wouldn't let anything happen to them. Ambition promised she'd be back before long. The eggs were meant to hatch before much longer, and she was determined to be there for it.

Praya Dubia slipped up.

One night, while he was sneaking out to check on the eggs, someone followed him. And then they told the queen, and the next time Praya Dubia arrived at the cave, he was greeted by her and two other guards.

She demanded he make a choice. Smash the eggs or lose his position, the respect of the other SeaWings, and the queen as a mother.

When Ambition returned a few days afterwards she found him standing silently at the cave entrance. He looked so scared, and that worried her too, but he wouldn't answer her questions, and so she rushed into the save herself and found-

The eggs, smashed open.

The limp bodies of the unhatched dragonets peeking out of the shells.

She roared out in fury and shock and grief, and Praya Dubia rushed in finally, and held her as she sobbed in his arms. He told her he was so so sorry, that it was awful, that he couldn't believe it, and so on.

But when Ambition finally asked what had happened, he got quiet. It took a while before he spoke, slowly and carefully recounting what had happened.
