Altered is a genderless, IceWing and Nightwing hybrid who originates from the Scorpion Den. They are a major character in Wings of Fire: Silent Sounds.
They have strong Mind-reading powers, but when the power is available to them is random. When they switch from being able to mind-read and being unable to, and vice-versa, it causes debilitating migraines that can cause them to be very dizzy, pass out, or send them into a coma-like state. This likely happens due to them being a hybrid.
They are mute, but an enchantment made by Stonemover on an earring that they wear lets them be able to communicate. However, due to the vagueness of the barely developed spell, the enchantment made them able to project their emotions and thoughts onto others at will and even communicate to others while asleep or comatose if they try hard enough. This spell seems to work by giving Altered telepathy.
Personality
Altered seems very distrusting of others, despite having the power to read minds. They seem to always be distracted as if an invisible dragon is telling them constantly what to do next.

Biography
Altered's egg was found in the middle of the desert by Ireheart and Faithless, two exiled NightWings, after they were coming back from scamming a few travellers. They flew back to the Scorpion Den and sold their treasure. Later, IceWing soldiers swarmed the town in search of the egg, but Ireheart had flown back into the desert with the egg in hopes of finding their parents. She returned with no new information and the IceWing soldiers later left. During the night, the egg hatched while in a streak of moonlight that was coming from a hole in the tent, presenting the two NightWings with a NightWing/IceWing hybrid with Mind-Reading powers. Ireheart chose the name Altered, as she felt the dragonet's future was 'altered' due to their circumstances, but underneath, Ireheart also felt that something was off with the dragonet, as if something had altered them to be like this, but she never mentions this.
At two years old, Altered was attacked by a few IceWings and NightWings living in the town due to being a hybrid between the two tribes; they tried to defend themself by using their fire breath, but due to being half IceWing, it ended up burning their throat and rendering them permanently mute. It seemed like they were going to be killed, but they were saved when another dragonet, Xerophilous, scared the attackers off by kicking up sand using his large wings, making a sort of small sandstorm which allowed the two to escape; they become close friends after this.
Soon after, Stonemover comes to the desert where he meets Thorn. During his stay, he overhears Xerophilous trying to help Altered communicate, as their throat injury was preventing them from doing so. He felt bad for the dragonet, as it reminded him of the dragonets back on the volcano. He walked over and offered to enchant an earring that Altered is wearing, before stating, "I enchant this earring to enable the dragon wearing it to be able to communicate, despite anything inhibiting them from being able to do so." However, due to this spell not being specific, Stonemover's spell was interpreted a different way, as the words of the spell were taken literally; the word 'communicate' granted Altered not only the ability to speak without physically having to do so, but also the ability to project to others their memories, emotions, and thoughts at will, and the word 'anything' granted them the ability to do the previously mentioned with any dragon or creature, regardless of distance, consciousness, or any sort of condition that would prevent them to reach their target. Stonemover disappears a year later.
Due to the experience with Stonemover, Altered starts heavily researching Animus magic as much as they can.

Xerophilous
Altered first met Xerophilous when they were saved by him when being attacked in the Scorpion Den. They have been friends ever since and he is one of the only dragons that they trust.

- Stonemover's spell did not heal Altered's throat injury, which means they are only able to communicate telepathically, not physically
- This likely happened as it was more efficient to let them speak using their mind instead of healing their throat and vocal cords
- Because of this, Altered's mouth does not move when they are speaking; however, their expression does change to match their tone when speaking, such as snarling when aggressive, or frowning when disappointed
