Part 1: A New Beginning[]

Chapter 1[]

Grapefruit stood at the entrance to Jade Mountain Academy. The huge mountain loomed up in front of her, tall and imposing. Grapefruit hadn't expected the mountain to be that tall.

"Go on Grapefruit. You'll be okay." Clementine, Grapefruit's mother, was standing behind her. Clementine was one of Queen Glory's most trusted generals. When Queen Glory first came to the rainforest three years ago, Clementine had been one of the only Rainwings that weren't lazy. Clementine knew about the missing Rainwings longer than anyone else, so when Glory became queen, Clementine had been of the main Rainwings to help her free the other Rainwings. After Queen Glory became queen of the Nightwings too, she made Clementine her top general. Grapefruit had hatched a few weeks later, but luckily, her mother managed to do her job and take care of her.

Which was why Grapefruit thought she was the best mother in the whole world.

"Mother, can't you come in with me?" she asked. "No. There's no need to," Clementine answered. "You're brave. If you can venture into the rainforest by yourself late at night, you can walk into a school."

Grapefruit turned to look at her mother. Clementine had dark orange scales, like a Skywing. But her underbelly and underside of her wings were dark pink. Clementine also had bright yellow eyes. Grapefruit didn't look like her at all. Grapefruit was a dark pink-purple color, the underside of her wings and her underbelly were a light blue, and she had pink eyes. Of course, not many Rainwings looked like their parents. In her village, Rainwings liked to look unique. They loved to be pink one minute, then purple the next. They changed colors constantly, so that was why dragons just didn't look like their parents.

"Mother, venturing out into the rainforest is different. I have Tiger with me-"

"Grapefruit, Tiger's coming with you. I know that you'll feel a bit nervous, so it would be fun to have your friend with you."

Tiger was a human. When Grapefruit had been out exploring a few months ago, she found the injured human. He couldn't get back home, so she had helped him heal. While he was healing, her and Tiger had become good friends. Luckily, before she met him, Grapefruit had been studying humans, so she had managed to learn how to speak and understand some human words. Grapefruit would be able to continue studying here, but Grapefruit was also hoping to teach Tiger how to speak dragon.

Clementine handed Grapefruit the cage with Tiger inside. Tiger wasn't Grapefruit's pet, but she kept him in a cage so no one would step on him. Plus, Tiger didn't mind cages. Tiger trusted Grapefruit, so she didn't have to worry about him running off or being scared of her.

Grapefruit stared at Tiger from inside the cage. He stared up at her, his dark eyes full of curiosity. Tiger wore an orange coat with black stripes, (which was why she named him Tiger) his hair was a little messy, and he had dark watchful eyes.

"Now go on," Clementine said. "I can't stay here for too long."

Grapefruit sighed. She hugged her mother and slipped into the entrance.

It seemed even bigger now that she was inside. and Grapefruit could hear Tiger squeaking with curiosity.

"I know. This place is cool!" Grapefruit whispered. She was in awe! It was great!

There were dragons EVERYWHERE. Everywhere she looked, there was at least one dragon or more.

In the corner, she could see a group of Icewings and Mudwings chatting happily. She couldn't believe it! It was better than she imagined!

"Hello!" a black dragon with purple eyes walked over to her. It was a Nightwing. She had silver teardrop scales beside her eyes, which had a 90% chance of being a mind reader. But then, Grapefruit recognized the dragon. Her name was Fatespeaker. She was a Nightwing who worked at Jade Mountain Academy. Fatespeaker had visited the rainforest a couple of times, so Grapefruit had gotten to meet her.

"Hi Fatespeaker!" Grapefruit said, bounding over to her.

"I'm glad that you came, Grapefruit!" Fatespeaker said.

"I am too! How are you?" Grapefruit asked.

"Great! Starflight's doing well too," Fatespeaker answered. "We finally finished our project of making scrolls that blind dragons can read."

"You did? How did you?"

"Well, we invented a little letter presser thing, so that worked pretty well."

"So a blind dragon has to learn to read by using their talon for that?"

"Yep!" Fatespeaker chirped. "Starflight figured out how to read them now. So has Tamarin."

Grapefruit remembered that they were working on another scroll project now as well. "Aren't you working on fireproof scrolls now?" she asked.

"Yes!" Fatespeaker said. At that same moment, a copper colored dragon bounded over to them, but still stayed out of their reach. "Yes. We are."

"Peril!" Grapefruit said. Grapefruit had somehow managed to meet Peril as well. Grapefruit had been one of the dragons Queen Glory had wanted to come with her on a visit to the Sky Kingdom, so Grapefruit had met Peril there.

Peril grinned and looked at Fatespeaker. "All the scroll lovers, mainly Starflight, are a little too excited on that project."

Fatespeaker shrugged. "We just don't want you to accidentally burn up the scrolls. Paper is very... flammable.

Peril looked at her. "Like I don't know."

"ANYWAYS," Fatespeaker said. "Welcome to Jade Mountain Academy Grapefruit!"

Fatespeaker reached into a pouch around her neck and took out two pieces of paper and handed them both to Grapefruit. "There's your welcome scroll and your map," she said. "You're in the Jade Winglet."

"Thanks!" Grapefruit said, and then she slipped into one of the tunnels that had a sign saying "Jade Winglet."

It was a long tunnel, but it wasn't that dark or small. There was surprisingly a lot of room, enough room that Grapefruit could spread her wings.

Up ahead, there was a group of Silkwings and Leafwings talking, and Grapefruit saw that they were arguing.

"I can't believe my mother made me come!" chirped a small crimson Silkwing. "I don't want to be here!"

"Same!" agreed a dark green Leafwing. "Queen Sequoia made me come because she wants me to study."

"Isn't your mother Princess Hazel?" asked a bright orange Silkwing. "You're the next heir. You should be here to study, but non-royal dragons shouldn't."

"The teachers seem idiotic," growled a dark green Leafwing with gold all over her.

"HEY!" a pale green Leafwing stomped over to the group. She looked about three years old, just like Grapefruit.

"My mothers are some of the teachers!"

"Ah, yes. I'm sorry your majesty," mocked a red Silkwing. "We didn't realize your parents were teachers."

"HOW DARE YOU? My mothers are WILLOW and SUNDEW! They helped save the world from Queen Wasp a few years ago. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!?" hissed the dragonet.

"Dragontrap come on! It wasn't your mothers that stopped the Othermind, it was a Silkwing," the royal Leafwing said.

"Not just any Silkwing!" snapped a bright orange Silkwing. "My mother stopped her!"

"Ah yes. I forgot," she said. "LUNA stopped her."

"Shut up Magnolia!" Dragontrap hissed. "Monarch is right! Her mother stopped the Othermind, but MY mothers helped."

"Oh forgive us!" mocked one of the other Leafwings.

Magnolia grinned. "Sorry Dragontrap, but maybe you should shut your trap."

Grapefruit couldn't take it anymore. "Excuse me!" she said, striding over to the group. Many pairs of eyes looked up at her, but she ignored them. "Why are you being so mean? What did these dragons do to you?" she demanded, flinging one wing out towards Dragontrap and Monarch.

Magnolia glared at her. "Why do you care?"

"Because princess, I don't like bullies. I also happen to be one of Queen Glory's favorite dragons."

Magnolia scowled. "So? I don't care what a Rainwing thinks."

"Well you should," Grapefruit snapped. From the cage, Tiger squeaked fiercely at Magnolia. Perhaps he understood some words, but she didn't care about that right now. "Every dragon should have a say. Not just some snobby little dragonets who think they're better than everyone else."

Magnolia bared her teeth, eyes smoldering with rage. "Take that back!"

"Make me!" Grapefruit challenged, wings spreading.

Magnolia crouched down, ready to leap at Magnolia, but before she could, a black and yellow shape launched out from one of the Jade Winglet caves. It was a Hivewing. The Hivewing had black scales that were striped with fuzzy swaths of bright yellow and yellow-and-black-striped wings. Black scales circled her yellow-gold eyes, making her look like a panda.

The dragonet glared at Magnolia. "Enough," she hissed. Dragontrap looked pleased to see the Hivewing, but Magnolia did not. Magnolia took a step backward. The group of Leafwings hissed and arched their backs, but Magnolia kept her eyes on the Hivewing.

"Fine. You Lizards win this time!" Magnolia eventually said, sprinting away. Her little group of Silkwings and Leafwings followed her.

Only Grapefruit, Dragontrap, Monarch, and the little Hivewing were still there, The Hivewing shook out her striped wings and walked over to them. "Hey Dragontrap!" she chirped happily. That was the first time Grapefruit had seen Dragontrap look happy. After a few seconds, the Hivewing turned to look at Grapefruit. Warmth glittered in the Hivewing's eyes. "Hello! What's your name?"

"Grapefruit," Grapefruit answered. "What's yours?"

"My name's Bumblebee! I'm Cricket and Blue's adopted daughter! Have you heard about them?"

"Oh-Of course I have," she said. "Cricket and Blue helped your guy's parents, right?" Grapefruit asked, looking at Dragontrap and Monarch.

"Yes," Monarch said. "Well, Cricket did. My father and Blue were trapped by the Othermind, but our mothers saved them!"

Monarch was a bright orange color. She also had some pea green spots around her eyes and her eyes were dark blue. She was certainly a pretty dragon. Dragontrap was a pale green color, with some gold all over her body, and some pale brown eyes.

"Thanks for helping my friends," Bumblebee said. "I hate Magnolia!" Monarch snapped. "She's such a jerk! I can't believe her mother is Princess Hazel."

"I can't believe she's the Leafwing heir," Dragontrap growled. "She's going to be a horrible queen."

"You want to talk about horrible queens?" Grapefruit asked. "I can name the Rainwing queens before Queen Glory came along. They never lifted a single claw to save their tribe. Queen Glory is the best queen we've had for centuries. "

"Really? I don't know much about Rainwing history," Bumblebee admitted. "I know more about Pantala history than Pyrrhia's."

"You're not much of a history dragon though," Monarch said. "You're more of a Sundew fan type dragon."

"I think you mean Snudoo," Bumblebee teased and Monarch started laughing.

"Yes you're right. I'm still a Sundew fan and I always will be. But, I need to learn at Jade Mountain first. I was mainly sent here so I could see if I had any powers and if I somehow did, I could learn how to use them."

"Yes, yes, we know," Dragontrap said. "As much as I love you calling my mother Snudoo, we should head to our cave."

Dragontrap, Monarch, and Bumblebee started walking away, but Bumblebee turned to face Dragontrap one last time.

"Thanks for helping my friends! It means a lot!"

"Oh it's nothing. I have to admit though, seeing Magnolia's face when you came out though was the best thing ever."

Bumblebee grinned. "No one would dare mess with me! She's lucky I'm not a Rainwing like you! I would have splat venom on her face the moment I came out of the cave!"

Grapefruit laughed. "Maybe use that for a step two," she suggested. Bumblebee shrugged. "Maybe." Bumblebee spotted Tiger in his cage. "Whoa! You have a human? My mother is obsessed with them!"

"Well if you're mother is Cricket, makes perfect sense."

Bumblebee put one of her wings over her snout, but Grapefruit could see her shoulders shaking. She was laughing!

"Don't you laugh! I'm completely serious!" Grapefruit said, but she was smiling too.

"Bumblebee!" Dragontrap's voice echoed. Bumblebee turned her head toward the voice before looking at Grapefruit again. "I have to go. See you!" she said. Bumblebee charged away, waving as she went. After she was gone, Grapefruit started toward her cave. When she got there, Grapefruit breathed out a happy sigh. "You know what, Tiger?" she said. Tiger looked up at her, curiosity gleaming in his gaze.

"Maybe Mother is right. I guess I'll have friends here after all." Grapefruit took one more breath, and stepped into her cave.

Chapter 2[]

Grapefruit's clawmates were actually pretty interesting. There was a Silkwing named Dusky in her winglet, who was five years old. He had actually been with Luna, Monarch's mother, when she went into the abyss. Grapefruit's other clawmates, Princess Auklet of the Seawings, absolutely loved hearing that story.

Grapefruit befriended them pretty quickly. The first day of school had no classes, so Grapefruit would get to know them all day. But, right now, she was on her way to the library. Grapefruit passed Bumblebee, Dragontrap, and Monarch, so Bumblebee waved. After she got to the library, Grapefruit saw the blind Librarian, Starflight, behind the desk. "Hey Starflight," she said as she went over. Grapefruit tapped her talons gently on his desk so he'd know where she was.

"Oh- Hi! Grapefruit, right?" Starflight asked, turning his head in her direction. "Can I see the new scrolls about Animus Magic and the Othermind?" she asked. "Sure," Starflight said. He pulled out two scrolls from underneath his desk and gave her a card. "This is your library card. This will allow you to check out and check in as many scrolls as you want."

"Thanks!" Grapefruit said. Grapefruit went over to one of the corners to read, for she wanted to be next to one of the leaf windows, so she could have some sunlight on her scales.

Grapefruit sat down and began to read the Othermind scroll.

Thousands of years ago, when Pantala was first found, there was an unusual plant. This plant had a dark red stem with bright green veins. The leaves of the plant were bright green with veins of red like rivers or streams of blood. Each leaf is the size of a dragon talon. The edges of the leaves are jagged and sharp. The flowers of this mysterious plant were tiny and white and they grew in clusters, nestled between the leaves. The seed hides in the heart of each flower, while the seed is a very dark red.

This plant was called the Breath of Evil. After dragons found out what it could do, mind-control other species, they got rid of it. Or, they tried to get rid of it.

The Breath of Evil plant was cleared away from the land, making dragons think that Pantala was safe from it forever. But it was only the beginning.

Thousands of years later, three years ago to be exact, a Flamesilk named Luna and her friends were trying to stop the vicious Queen Wasp, who could mind-control other dragons. They had just recently met Pyrrihan dragons, who had sworn to help them with their quest. Because of the echo of a recent prophecy, Luna dove deep into a dark and deep abyss, and found out a horrifying secret.

A human and dragonet were controlling the Othermind. After finding out that she couldn't leave, Luna was taken over by the plant, and got stuck in this place called the Mindspace.

The human, who's name was Cottonmouth, wanted to control all dragons. This sneaky little human was also the reason behind the Scorching. (See: The Legend of the Scorching, UPDATED.) The dragonet, who's name was Lizard, wanted dragon memories since she never got a dragon life. She believed that dragons were mindless reptiles. However, Luna helped her realize that dragons aren't just brainless lizards to be controlled, so Lizard helped her stop Cottonmouth, and risked her life to do so.

Luckily, in the last moments of her life, Lizard thought of a new name for herself, so she wouldn't have to fully die with Cottonmouth's name for her. Lizard renamed herself as Freedom, for that would be what she was getting, and helping others get too. Luna cut the final vine, killing Lizard, but saving everyone else from the Othermind forever.

Grapefruit loved reading that story. It was something her mother would read to her constantly. It was because it showed that ordinary dragons that seem useless could actually change the world.

Grapefruit wasn't a special and magnificent hero, but she still felt like she had a destiny. A purpose.

Grapefruit looked at her other scroll, about Animus Magic.

Jerboa, a Sandwing Animus, had recently been discovered to be the dragon that broke Animus Magic. She felt like Animus Dragons couldn't be trusted with that kind of power, so she enchanted Animus Magic to never work again.

However, many dragons thought it would start working again. It could have just been that current generation. Maybe in this generation, dragons would be able to use magic again!

Grapefruit kind of hoped that she was an Animus Dragon. Not because she wanted to start casting magic everywhere the eye could see, but she wanted to save the world! She wouldn't use it for anything else, except for saving her tribe or family.

Grapefruit at the same time, didn't really trust Animus Magic. It was cool and exciting, but it could be really scary and dangerous as well. Grapefruit didn't know what would happen if an Animus Dragon went evil. Of course, that happened at least twice over the centuries. There were some dragons she knew were Animus Dragons before the powers went off.

But they were ordinary dragons now, but they still saved the world from the Othermind. Did the world really need Animus Magic if they could solve problems by themselves?

Grapefruit decided to go to the Prey Center next. She was feeling awfully hungry.

As Grapefruit got near the Prey Center, she could already hear how loud it was in there. There were constant shouts or roars but Grapefruit had already expected it to be noisy.

As she emerged into the cave, she could barely even see anything. There were so many dragons! Suddenly, all the dragons she saw at the entrance didn't seem like a lot anymore. her scrolls were tucked in neatly inside her pouch, which she normally had on her. She was holding the cage with Tiger in it close to her, so a dragon wouldn't steal it from her.

Tiger seemed overwhelmed as well. His paws were over his ears and his eyes were wide with surprise with how loud it was.

Grapefruit glanced around, trying to find a fruit pile. There were so many dragons, she could barely see anything but scales, teeth, and flashing claws.

Finally, she caught sight of a pile of fruit that was neatly tucked away in a corner. Two other Rainwings were over there, chatting. Grapefruit hurried over and saw there were more fruits than she had thought. There were mangoes, pears, bananas, and many others. Grapefruit grabbed a mango and sliced it up neatly with her claws. Grapefruit put some pieces of the mango in Tiger's cage, for he seemed to really like fruit, and she ate the rest of the mango herself.

The two Rainwings were having a little conversation, pretending not to notice her.

"Guava, I'm getting nervous. How do they know the Othermind is gone forever?" the pale red Rainwing said nervously.

The dark green Rainwing rolled her eyes. "Because that Silkwing cut the vines herself. I promise you that the Othermind is gone Boa."

Boa flicked her tail nervously. "I don't know... Who knows? It's a big world."

Guava rolled her eyes again. "Yeah, but there's only two continents. Where could the Othermind possibly be if it's not destroyed?"

Boa shrugged. "I don't know. Some Rainwings have sworn that they have spotted the plant a couple of times, but when Queen Glory sends out a team to search, it's gone."

Grapefruit froze, she looked at them, but they didn't notice her still.

"Ugh. Those are just stories. You're so nervous. You don't have to worry. No one does anymore."

The two Rainwings walked away, murmuring to each other some more. Grapefruit stared after them surprised. What? What did that Boa mean? Is she right?

Shivering, Grapefruit hurried out of the Prey Center, squeezing herself through the crowd. She made it out quicker than she had gotten in.

Is Boa right? Are there still plants around?

As she went back to her cave, one thought went through her mind: Is the Othermind still alive?
