The Animi Prophecy[]

Four dragons with magical claws

Two dragons with the power of laws

Don't trust the dragons of polar and snow

Everyday their greed will grow

At the mountain of crystals the four must be

The power inside of thee

Can defeat the wings of ice and sea

Their lives are at the claws of life

They must avoid the sharpened knife

A moon after the dragons are warned

The wings of ice's daughter will be born

If they suceed the world will be at peace

And the terrible greed will cease

Crack.

A creamy-white-and-icy-blue female IceWing with a glittering, pale-blue-and-gray crown on her head turned to face the egg.

Crack, crack.

“Polar,” she whispered, nudging the dozing pure white dragon beside her with her tail. “Look.”

The white dragon -- a he -- looked at her, then at the egg, and tucked their dragonet closer -- a pale blue dragonet whose blue got darker along his spine. The spikes on him were light blue and his eyes were piercingly dark blue.

A crack formed on the top of the egg.

The three dragons held their breaths, looking intently at the egg.

Crack, crack.

A network of cracks appeared, and a small, pale blue snout shoved itself into the cold, endless world. The top piece of the egg came off, and the dragonet toppled the egg over and struggled through the small hole. More pieces came off as she forced her way out.

Finally, the dragonet tumbled out of the egg and stopped in front of Snowdrift’s waiting talons. Snowdrift picked her second dragonet up.

A daughter.

My heir to the throne.

“Your heir to the throne,” Polar whispered, echoing her thoughts about the dragonet.

“What are you going to name her?” their first dragonet piped up.

“Let me think . . .” Snowdrift mused. “How about . . . Freeze? She looks like ice with her pale and light blue scales.”

“That’s a good name,” King Polar said.

For the first time, when Snowdrift looked at the little dragonet -- now named Freeze -- she saw her huge, bright, shining icy blue eyes gazing straight at her, as if asking who she was.

“I’m your mother, Queen Snowdrift,” she answered. “That’s your father, King Polar, and your brother, Prince Hail.” She handed the young dragonet to her brother.

“A sister,” Hail said dreamily.

Snowdrift smothered a giggle. She was proud, stubborn, and arrogant, but just looking at her daughter and being with her family -- she just felt as if she wasn’t herself. In fact, she was proud of her daughter, the heir to the throne, and happy that she had been born.

She thought of the private tutor she hired for her son, Hail. Sleet was a great teacher -- proud, arrogant, great at hunting and fighting, and great at teaching. She wondered if she should let Sleet mentor both Freeze and Hail.

“Hail, what do you think of Sleet?” she asked her son, who was still cupping Freeze in his talons.

“Sleet is a great tutor,” Hail replied, though she could see that he was trying to cover his annoyance and disgust about that experienced teacher. She smothered another giggle and glanced at Polar. He was gazing at his daughter with pride and happiness shining in his eyes.
