Prologue:

Conifer closed his eyes, waiting for death.

It was too late.

Bands of steel encased his limbs, the hooded who was holding the shining silver syringe smiled, and spun the syringe in her talons.

“Well, Conifer. It appears we are at an impasse.” A silky laugh echoed from underneath the hood and the dragoness swept back her hood. Long ink-black horns shone and slender antennae twitched.

The cloak that covered her missing wing was far larger than it should be, Conifer noted, calm settling over his body. His bound wings twitched as he tried to escape the strong bands encircling him.

But it was fruitless.

He was going to die at the talons of the one who created him.

Chapter 1:

Rave flared her wings, twitching her antennae. Her glimmering green eyes watered as she stared out over the mountains. Being a tribrid, she was never allowed to even visit any of her tribe’s homes. Not the SilkWings, not the RainWings, not even the SkyWings.

Her mother: A SkyWing/RainWing hybrid, killed by the SkyWings.

Her father: A SilkWing, who had fled before she hatched across the ocean in hopes of finding a third continent.

The world sure had regressed since the time of Rave’s ancestors. Her grandfather had been named Blue. Her grandmother, Glory. Last, everyone’s least favourite dragon in existence... Grandmother Scarlet. She was once queen of the SkyWings. Such "horrific" ancestors made Rave probably the most feared dragon in the world. Having flamesilk, venom and fire didn’t help much either. Maybe the world would be better off without me, Rave thought, tears from her eyes splashing against the cold, hard dirt. She curled up, covering herself with her wings. She was quite obviously a tribrid, with wings like a SkyWing, a RainWing ruff, and SilkWing antennae. Oh, and the fact she could change her wing colour. But that’s it. It did make for some pretty cool tricks were Rave pretended to have no wings, but those days were far behind her now. The sound of wingbeats roused Rave from her thoughts. Gasping, she started to jump up just as a dragon landed on top of her.

“Oops! Sorry! Didn’t see you there!” A wall of colour practically smacked Rave in the face as the dragon untangled herself from Rave’s wings.

“Whoa...” Rave whispered, staring at the stunning dragon in front of her.

Glittering deep black scales. Bright red, orange and purple marks bright as stars, constellations on scales. A long snout with a small stinger at the end of a tail.

“I’m Stag!” The dragon said, a silly grin on her face. Rave suddenly felt shy, and she blushed.

“I’m.... Rave,” she whispered, a roaring in her ears.

“A tribrid, right?” Stag circled Rave, looking at her with interest. “I can see Silk, Sky and Rain. Huh. Never seen another Pantalan/Phyrrian mix before, let alone a tribrid!” Rave must have looked confused because Stag added “Oh, I’m a Hive/Rain. Mostly Hive, that’s why the stinger and the black and all that. But anyway!” She smiled, large purple wings twitching in a nervous energy. “See you around, Rave.”

Rave stared at Stag as she spread her wings and leapt off the edge of the cliff, long tail flicking as she went. She had a feeling that her life would be changed forever.

Chapter 2:

Darkness.

That’s all she’d ever known.

Kidnapped when just a young dragonet, Blizzard was no stranger to pain. Yet this was the worst kind.

The pain of abandonment.

The pain that you only knew when someone you loved betrayed you.

Like Conifer.

Blizzard still heard is harsh words as he left her.

“Go. Fend for yourself.” His voice still ringing in her ears, what he said after he rescued her.

The flashback is sudden, Blizzard’s sewn-together eyelids slightly widening in shock.

Standing in a cage just wide enough for her body, tail trapped in bars. Claws winding around heavy metal grilles, snouts wrapped with chains.

Dull, stone floors, well-worn by many talons forever scraping the rough grey tiles.

Bloodstains, marring the rough surface with many imperfections.

Screams, echoing through the corridors constantly.

“The screams never stop, do they?” Blizzard’s soft voice rang to the other side of the narrow corridor to the prisoner across from her.

“No,” He whispered, haunted eyes catching hers in a wistful way, then locking and holding them tight. Blizzard could see her own snout reflected in his eyes, haunting acidic green gaze pinning her tight.

The stomping talons of the guards paraded down the hall, and Blizzards eyes widened.

“You have something we want,” they whispered, shoving their spears into her cage, long metal prongs biting into her scales.

“I don’t have anything,” Her soft voice rang loudly, too loudly through the halls, and the dragon across from her cringed back.

“Ahhh, but you do.” Blizzard was yanked forcefully out of the cage, her long tail flicking, and she was chained tighter, and pulled up the hallway. The green dragon who was a cross from her solemnly watched her leave with an eerie calm.
