prologue[]

5,013 AS (after scorching)

Moon wasn't sure why she was doing it.

But she waited anyway.

The heat of the desert was excruciating, so Moon and Qibli lay among the trees of the nearby rainforest. Two days ago, she had toppled over with a vision of a dot in the air, expanding over a desert to show two blobs attacking each other.

The next day, she burst into a prophecy.

Two dragons are coming.

One new, one old.

One with secrets.

One with advancity.

One stays, one goes.

One with wings of science,

One with wings of night.

But both...

Came from the future.

One cannot go back.

And the other finds their way.

The boat of the night stars...

Has a secret...

Buried within.

When it is found,

The one who stays can go.

And then,

Come back.

Qibli had commented, “Whoa, something to have a prophecy about. Must be serious.” Moon had collapsed into giggles at that.

Presently, Moon looked up at a loud noise, and, just as the sun began to set, saw a tiny black dot expanding in the sky.

Qibli uttered a low whistle.

It was time.

chapter 1[]

Ten thousand years later (seriously, no kidding)

15,128 AS

Tachyon was glaring at his alfredo when Xenon stormed in.

“Want parmesan with that?” she said sarcastically, taking great care not to look at the cheese already in it.

Tachyon transferred his glare upward to scowl at her.

Xenon sighed. “We received contact of an unknown starship. We need you, our best pilot, to check it out.” She indicated Tachyon’s half-full bowl. “You better hurry up and finish that.”

Tachyon’s scowl and glare had vanished, but he still stared at Xenon with a bored expression.

“Fine. Just tell me where to go when I'm done.”

“The Bridge. We’ll talk, then you head over to the docks. You’ll want your UVG. You know which one I'm talking about. ” Xenon grinned.

“I do.” Tachyon let his four wings rise and fall in a kind of shrug. He had had to memorize his three ships, the Sashay, an outdated SR (search/rescue, though it was never used to rescue, only search.) pod, a UVG ship named Mercury (the liquid-solid metal), and an Aracnid he had obtained very recently and was still puzzling over a name for (more than half the ships were unnamed.). They were easy to find, The Sashay was usually attached under Mercury, and seeing an SR was pretty rare, anyway. Mercury stood out, being painted red with streaks of light blue. The Aracnid was nearly impossible to find, being painted like all the others, so he memorized the number printed on its side.

Xenon nodded, then flew to the ledge above the main door. Just before she left, she said, “By the way, you're unbearably white,” then turned and walked through the door.

Tachyon glared at the ledge so hard, he was surprised it didn't rip itself off the wall.

It was true, he looked like a pure white SilkWing of ten thousand years ago, with a line of black scales (which is impossible for SilkWings, he had read at some point) along his neck, and he had gotten used to Xenon teasing him about it, but that didn’t stop Tachyon from glaring at her every time she did it.

A few minutes later, he was rocketing toward the bridge, passing some of the ORVs, or off-road vehicles (awkwardly named because they were never used outside ships, though they were meant to handle the forces of nature and the wilderness.) that were lugging cargo around.

Tachyon landed in front of the door, talons clacking on the heated metal floors, and  moved to open it. But before he could, a tingling ran up from from his claws, and he shuddered. He opened the door.

“Permis-” Tachyon started.

“Permission granted. Get over here, quick,” Saturn interrupted.

Tachyon hastily obeyed.

The captain, Saturn, plunged into an explanation. “Our external sensors picked up an extreme heat signature. It’s an estimated eight thousand degrees. Our own max out at five thousand. We need you to go over…” an area on the viewport was immediately highlighted. “there. We’ll keep you on track.”

Tachyon stared at the purplish ScienceWing and nodded. “Yes, captain.”

“Alright then, begone with you.”

Next thing he knew, he was gripping the controls, and the whole ship was getting forced sideways.Tachyon put the thrusters to full and followed the direction they were pushing him. A while later, he noticed something odd. The stars seemed to shift positions all of a sudden.

Wait a minute.

Tachyon immediately reached over and flipped the spotlight switch.

And, to his horror, a black and white ship twice the size of his own appeared out of nowhere.

Quickly, he backed Mercury up, but it was already too late.

The ship opened fire on his.

However, before he could react, strait bolts of lightning shot out from the wing-like structures on the other ship, and silently engulfed both of them.

Tachyon felt all time, matter, and energy compress.

And then everything went black.

Both of the ships the mercury and unknown

-HOME (RUNAWAY WARSHIP)-

Back on the bridge, chaos reigned.

A huge energy spike had erupted from the bottom quarter and clean off the screen. When it came back a second later, it was a perfectly straight line that flung itself from the top to the very bottom in an instant.

chapter 2[]

Ten thousand years earlier...

5,013 AS

First, all was black.

Then, all was white.

Tachyon was hitting buttons and flipping switches even as his vision cleared.

He noticed several things at once:

Gravity

There was an evening sky

Sunset

Sunset

Lasers were being thrown at him

He had to activate at least half of the bottom thrusters in order to accommodate for gravity

Sky

There were several thuds and clattering behind him, but he didn’t notice. His eyes were screwed up in concentration, his wings and even antenna were pulled back, as if meeting strong winds. His mind was racing so fast, it seemed like his name actually meant something.

Both cannons went off at the same time, and the whole ship jerked backward, shuddered, and regained balance. Several blue lasers whizzed past the cockpit, but none hit. Soon, Tachyon realized that they were trying to tear away the armored hull and destroy the engines, and he thrusted backward hard. His talon hovered over “Eject Cockpit” button, then remembered the SR hanging under Mercury. Tachyon tore his eyes away from the viewport momentarily to glance at the console. It declared proudly that the Sashay was suspiciously not damaged in the slightest.

Until now, Tachyon thought bitterly.

He hit both the Autopilot and Autofire buttons, unbuckled himself from the seat, grabbed the trapdoor at the back of the cockpit, and heaved it open. He flew down the stairs, pulled both doors open, and settled in front of the less complex controls.

He disengaged the magnets, then flew out from under Mercury. Dodging the incoming lasers, he dov forward to plant the SR strait into the ground.

The Sashay

Bad idea.

A laser slammed into the Sashay. The whole ship flung itself out of the sand (Sand? I’m in a desert? Or is this a beach?), did a barrel roll, hit the ground, rolled a bit more, and came to a stop, and faced the “battle” as both starships fired their final blows.

First, Mercury fired two at once. One missed, but the other smashed into what appeared to be a rotating thruster, which broke off, bringing a heavily damaged wing with it.

Just before falling, six red beams flew from the base of the nose to the tip. The air began to reverberate as the beams exploded forward and compacted into one.

And before it hit, he had one thought before he shut his eyes and covered his ears.

They aren’t aiming for the engine. They're aiming for the fuel tank! They’re going to blow up th—

-JMA-

Tsunami, Sunny, Clay, and Starflight pushed their way through the turmoil.

Sunny got there first. “Oh, dear,” she squeaked.

They skidded to a halt at the window and immediately shielded their eyes.

“What is it?” Starflight asked.

“It’s a cloud…” Clay mumbled.

“Of fire,” Tsunami finished.

-ISLAND OFF WESTERN PYRRHIAN COAST-

Luna looked up from the island and toward Pyrrhia.

She gasped.

Whatever she was expecting, this wasn't it.

-COPSE OF TREES NEAR KINGDOM OF SAND SOUTHEASTERN EDGE-

Moon and Qibli ducked as a burning chunk of metal flew over their heads.

A white light flashed beside the cloud and was gone.

Tonight, after the flames had faded, the desert was quieter than ever.

chapter 3[]

Day One

Everything was white. WHITE! White, white, white. Wait— was that yellow? No, orange. A lot of orange. And heat. It was incredibly hot! HE WAS MELTING IN HIS OWN SCALES! AGGGH!

Tachyon howled as a blinding light forced its way through his eyelids. Sweltering heat exploded through him…. But then it was gone. He was cold. Really cold. Too cold. And then warm again. Confused, he woke.

He opened his eyes, as if for the first time.

Oh.

I’m lucky to be alive.

Something was tugging at his wings.

He glanced around, but everything was fine.

Actually, he didn’t notice for about five seconds.

His stomach flipped. He groaned and pressed his claw into the hole in the seatbelt until it clicked, dropping a few feet and onto the floor.

Or, more accurately, the ceiling.

The entire Sashay was upturned.

Glancing out the viewport, he noticed the right side of the Sashay was submerged in sand, blocking one of the doors and making the ground titled.

He flew uphill and was going to disengage the airtight lock when he realized he hadn't done an atmosphere test. Sliding back down, he pushed the “TEST” button then flicked the “ATMOSPHERE” switch, then went off to scrounge up repair tools in the cargo compartment.

An hour later, he dragged some futuristic wrenches and whatnot to the control panel.

The atmosphere… tested positive, which meant it was breathable.

He disabled the lock and tugged at the handle.

It didn’t budge.

A nice few hours later of pulling and pushing…

Tachyon braced himself against the wall and heaved upon the door, yelling, “OPEN!”

There was a familiar pop, then an unfamiliar grinding and shrill screeching noise that emanated from the door.

The door slid open and slid almost all the way into the wall, dragging a dumbfounded Tachyon with it, who was still latched onto the handle.

He collapsed, possibly from the stifling heat that rolled into the starship.

After regaining his strength, Tachyon jumped out the door.

He yelped.

Instead of landing on one of the four stubby little wings on the sides of the ship, he dropped some ten feet until he slowed himself and flew to the ground, wings buzzing.

He yelped again.

He had stepped on something sharp, and he bent in an awkward position to inspect it. It was transparent, possibly glass. Looking around, he noticed there was glass everywhere for miles.

Tachon laughed. It was obvious, as sand was rich in silica, literally the only thing needed to make glass other than heat. And that heat was provided, making the desert turn into a sparkling array of… glass.

Flying up again, he studied the scratches and peeling paint that covered the ship.

He circled around, and winced.

There was a three foot wide dent on the side of the ship. The metal had just barely ripped apart, and if the thing had hit any harder it would have ripped the ship in half. He also noticed the small change in environment. The dunes had changed position, if he recalled correctly.

He could visualize the whole thing: Mercury splitting apart, the full tank of fuel ignited all at once, the force of the blast sending the Sashay flying as he went unconscious, and burning chunks of metal slamming into it as the SR pod flung itself away from the area.

I suppose I have all the time in the world to fix this.

-COPSE OF TREES NEAR KINGDOM OF SAND SOUTHERN EDGE-

Moon told Qibli her plan.

He nodded and got ready to fly.

• -- •

-KINGDOM OF SAND MIDDLE EASTERN EDGE-

Luna and the small group of dragons landed on the desert beach. The band consisted of one of each tribe.

“You really sure we should have a look?” the HiveWing asked nervously.

“Of course!” muttered the LeafWing who came up with the idea.

When they were halfway there, the sun had already set and they decided to camp for the night. When the camp was fully set up, the unexpected happened.

There was a distant screech of grinding metal, and a distant shadow lifted from behind the dunes, a line of bright blue trailing from it, slingshotted toward them, arced upward, making a semi loop, and exploded in the direction of Jade Mountain.

“Any idea what that was?” the HiveWing whimpered.

“Who cares? At least we're still alive,” the RainWing pointed out.
