Yuma looks like a lot of SandWings out there, in terms of objective physical appearance. She has the build of her tribe, though slightly taller than most females her age and a good deal thinner. Yuma is lanky and owns long limbs that often get in her way and that she often leaves swinging by her sides, for she doesn't really know what to do with them. Her wings are longer than usual, her eyes larger than most, but other than that, she generally blends in with the crowd, though she might be more gangly than most.
Her scales are a solid dusty yellow color. No patterns or gradients run through her scales, though she often wishes they might. Her scales take on a grayish tint when she stays up too late or gets sick, yet most often go back to normal within a few hours. Her wing membranes are a darker shade of the same color, yet nothing particularly stands out about them. Just like most everything in Yuma's appearance, or so she believes. Her horns are curved and short, and the same dark gold as her wing membranes. Her tail ends in the poisonous scorpion barb, and she has a tendency to flick it back and forth, either to intimidate dragons she dislikes or perhaps to make them stay away. No one quite knows the origins of this strange behavior, and she herself doesn't seem to remember, although it's become a habit.
Yuma owns obsidian black eyes that are the feature that makes her most interesting. Not due to the color, nor to the shape, but to the look. The intelligent, perhaps even restless, intense look that often lurks beneath it. Yuma is constantly thinking, be it about trivial matters or astronomical ones, but she adores contemplating the odd phenomena she encounters. Her facial expressions are often skeptical and frowning, but when she smiles, it is both rare and rewarding.
Many refer to Yuma as a quirky SandWing who should be kept away from their dragonets. Others think of her as smart, creative, and an excellent influence. Yuma isn't really sure what to think.
She's not very friendly, but isn't unfriendly either. Though her skeptical comments and pessimistic air make her rather unpopular for first acquaintances, she doesn't mean to harm anyone and simply speaks the blunt truth. She isn't very social, but not because she dislikes interactions, but because she isn't very good at them. Yuma has the ability to make any situation awkward, although she doesn't try to do so. She is very quirky, perhaps even considered "odd" by some, due to her rather twitchy ways and tendency to ignore everyone, but others choose to spend time with her due to her unique demeanor and unconventional ways of going about the world.
She finds it difficult to put herself in others' shoes, perhaps due to her lack of connection with other dragons or her general distance from everyone. Yuma doesn't like dragon to dragon contact, feeling incredibly uncomfortable when it comes to hugging or kissing her friends and family. The only thing she does tolerate is the brushing of wings, and even then, she has her reservations. Yuma hates to see injustice or to see someone suffer. Whenever she sees a bug in her home, she insists upon either saving it or killing it quickly, so that it does not feel pain. This leads her to be laughed at by a number of dragons, though she is acting with kindness and mercy. She acts as though she isn't bothered by this laughter, but she is. She always is.
Yuma appears unbothered most of the time, though in actuality, she is incredibly insecure and cares deeply about what others think. Even when it comes to her appearance, which she doesn't particularly care about, she worries whether other dragons think she looks dumb or unfortunate. She hates being pitied, and will even go so far as to get mad when anyone supposedly "feels bad" for her. Yuma has a problem with insulting people or dismissing them without meaning to, and finds herself on the receiving end of lectures or is ignored by those she accidentally lashes out at. She can accidentally offend people by things she says, but is a very accepting young dragon who just doesn't understand what she says most of the time. However, she is rather hypocritical in the sense that she does get angry when anyone says anything insensitive or offensive to her, although she isn't the type to hold a grudge, forgetting about past arguments quickly, as she occupies herself with other more important things.
Yuma was always a little strange. From the moment she was young, her parents doted on her and believed she was a brilliant dragonet, which, by all means, she was. Despite her strange behavior, be it the way she was constantly moving around or how she raised her voice in anger when interrupted, Yuma was treated kindly and with respect. Though she got into arguments with her parents and occasionally was spoiled by them, she loved them. The family was happy. Even when Yuma argued with her little sister, she cared for her deeply.
But of course, her sweet life was short-lived, so to speak. When Yuma turned 5, she was sent to Jade Mountain Academy, a school which promised everything she wanted: knowledge, scrolls, and fun social activities. However, only two of the three promises were fulfilled. Yuma struggled socially, and found herself estranged from her winglet, clawmates, and students in general. She hid in the library and the art room most days, drawing, reading, and soaking up knowledge to forget about being social. She didn't care much about other dragons, honestly, but she cared for her family, who insisted she would only be happy if she talked with others and made friends. But that goal seemed difficult to reach, and Yuma didn't even know if she was trying anymore.
But in her second semester, she met someone. Someone in the library, who looked just as alone as she did, but who was buried in a scroll. She was a small NightWing, Eri, a girl who seemed to worry way too much about what others thought, despite being alone and friendless herself. The two became friends quickly, bonding over their love for scrolls and fiction and making up stories amongst themselves. They stopped caring about what others were thinking and just played in their own world, forgetting everything around them. They remained this way for a year at the academy, but when they returned later, it seemed different. Yuma found a friend who seemed to care for her and respect her opinions, and Eri seemed to drift away. She always thought Eri wanted something more, but never knew why, or what was wrong with their friendship. But Yuma was wrong. The two hadn't drifted apart, social expectations and circumstances had severed the strengthening bond between them.
The two grew up and graduated from the academy, and Yuma never saw Eri, perhaps occasional glimpses of her friend, be that in a restaurant near the Sand Kingdom. Her friend always seemed to want more, to explore, to get the most out of her life, and Yuma respected it. Unlike her reckless friend, she had become a scientist, a girl who put all her attention into her work and didn't pay attention to anyone else. Of course, she suffered the consequences of this, and found herself longing for company. She found herself longing for Eri's company. She missed her best friend.
But when she arrived at the Diamond Spray River, where Eri had been, she found only a small SkyWing with a nervous expression. "I-I need your help," she had panted.
"What's wrong?" was the reply, for Yuma didn't know how to deal with panicking dragons and felt panicked herself whenever forced to comfort one. 'What's wrong' was the only thing she knew to say.
"Well, I'll first ask why you're here." The SkyWing nervously wrung her talons as Yuma poured out her story, how she missed her best friend and longed for her company. The SkyWing sighed in a somewhat pitying manner by the end. Yuma hated being pitied, but she chose to let it go as her new acquaintance opened her mouth to speak. "Eri's dead. I'm sorry. We don't know how. But ... well, we've got a very difficult situation here." She paused. "I'm not exactly sure ... okay, well, Eri left us in possession of her egg while she ran off with some dragon. The egg's about to hatch, we've kept it safe and in the necessary conditions, but ... we've got no one to take care of the dragonet. Could - could you?"
Yuma, in a bout of strange recklessness and loneliness, accepted. She would be taking care of Eri's child. She would be akin to a mother. She would have company. Yuma regretted her decision minutes after making it, but in the long run, she would realize that the little dragonet would give her company. She was only 19 human years at the time. A 19 year old scientist with a quirky disposition who would soon be taking care of a little girl.
The egg hatched a few days after. The surface splintered, and a tiny dragonet broke through. She had huge eyes and a thin face, pretty but undeniably different from the rest. Yuma didn't know what to think. She personally thought that newborn dragons were ugly, but there was a strange need to protect the little child from harm. She brought the dragonet to her home, but had little time to raise her. The dragonet grew up on her own. Her name was Ara, and she was, by all means, talented.
